SmartSwitch
The SmartSwitch solid state switch uses an onboard microcontroller to control the timing of
power application to your kiln, temperature chamber or refractory oven. These switches give
you two critical capabilities:
1) phase control of the solid state switch means that you can power a kiln requiring a larger
amperage than the maximum rating of the power line. For instance a 50 ampere kiln can
be run on a 30 ampere line. This is done by switching on only a portion of the power cycle.
In effect the kiln is supplied with 30 amperes but still sees full voltage during the on part
of the cycle and because of this is totally safe. The kiln will not reach full temperature
that it would with full rated current but in many instances this is not necessary. One
example of this would be use with environmental chambers where the chamber is being
maintained at a moderate temperature.
2) SmartSwitch can be programmed with a time profile so you can effectively control your
device power setting over an time interval by simply programming in the setting profile
via the serial port of your computer and hitting go in the software. From then on the
SmartSwitch will control the kiln power by setting to 1 of 256 power levels. This
is called "sitter" mode.
